Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel The Help has quickly raced up the bestseller list. Stockett intertwines the lives of three ordinary characters living in Mississippi during the 1960s.

Miss Skeeter, a young college graduate, returns to her hometown only to discover her maid and good friend, Constantine, has disappeared and no one will explain what happened. Miss Skeeter’s mother wishes she would focus on finding herself a respectable husband rather than finding her childhood maid.

Aibileen is a black maid who is raising her seventeenth white child just years after losing her own son. Aibileen is the maid to one of Miss Skeeter’s friends.

Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is known for her sassy mouth and for being the best cook in Mississippi. Minny’s mouth has cost her many jobs as a maid, but she has finally managed to keep a job with a white woman who harbors many secrets of her own.

This novel takes readers through a journey of the South when racial tensions are high. Within this setting, these three women begin a secret project that puts their lives at risk.

I got the Furminator from Amazon and saved at least $10 or more from the retail pet shops nearby. My only complaint which is insignificant for the money I saved is that it instructs you to keep the comb covered with the plastic protector when not in use. Good idea except for the fact that although my package was sealed, the plastic protector enclosed must belong to a much larger Furminator. I have to keep the cover secured to the Furminator with a rubber band. Other than that it does seem to get a lot of the fine hair out, although I have not seen miraculous results yet as I have a short haired dog. It is shedding season as it is getting warmer out so I continue to use it every day. Looks fine enough to use as a flea comb, too, although they continue to elude me. This 2-2/3 inch edge is almost too big for my sized dog so be sure to get the right size if you have a smaller dog. I was on the fence for the size and decided I’d rather have free shipping and get the bigger size. I wish I would have bought this before the first stiff bristled and brass bristled brush that I got for my dog which is almost useless!

The actual main character (Artemis Fowl) was despicable. I doubt I will read anymore of these “Foul” books. I gave this two stars only because I really liked the main fairy Holly and had to finish the book to find out if her and her compadres were okay. The book should center around them instead of an unlikable snotwad like Artemis Fowl.

I agree with most everything that recent favorables reviews have said. A couple of additional things that I’ll emphasize.

1) Easy to use. Step on and get your reading immediately. Big clear display with blue backlighting makes it easy to read, even in the dark.
2) Stylish. Looks cool with the near transparent glass platform and sits elegantly in a corner of my bathroom.
3) The glass is nicer than some of the other scales that I have had where after a while water stains appear or water loosens the adhesive of the scale covering causing it to peel back and looking unsightly.

Only two minor things I’ll mention (probably because I’m picky):
a) The manual said that the default factory setting was in pounds, but the switch on the underside of the scale was set to kilograms. Not a big deal as the switch is easy to change; still it was a surprise.
b) One day I accidently stepped on the edge of the scale (it’s tempered transparent glass), and because of the positioning of the feet relative to the edge of the glass platform, the scale flipped up. I was afraid that I was about to break the glass, but I caught it in time. This hasn’t happened again as I’m more careful. The glass may be strong enough to handle flipping over, but I would not recommend this scale for a child’s bathroom because of the potential for glass breakage. I’m sure that’s why it is made of tempered glass to make it as safe as possible; no one would cut themselves, but it would be a mess.

I read this book for my monthly book club. It definitely brought up several hours of dialogue. Though I do not necessarily agree with everything the Author stated, it did make me think about a lot of things. It touched several members in my bookclub and for some they felt it depended on your personal relationship with God. Some of us just choose to follow the Bible instead of this book. However, we can respect that this is how the Author felt the Lord was talking to him.
