The plot elements are great, but the main character/narrator is not. Holden Caulfield is one of the least sympathetic characters in literary history. His voice is hard to read because it is so annoying. It is hard to imagine any real person speak or think like that, regardless of the time period. For most people, this book is very “Love it or hate it”; I think it is a must read for that reason. Everyone should make up their own mind about it.
