I never write reviews, but when I saw how many five stars there were in comparison to one stars, I had to support those fellow readers who disliked this book as much as me. I was hooked by the time period and the circus idea, and I was looking forward to being drawn into that world, but the author did not deliver on either of those points at all. I felt like she created a pretty shabby structure for her novel by throwing a bunch of “well researched” pieces of information together. She then attempted to flesh in a story around this rickety structure with hollow, card-board, characters. The voice of young Jacob is meant to carry us through the story of the past, but I felt nothing for him or anyone else in the story. The relationships were so very empty, there were no reasons for anyone to have any connection to anybody else. I was not interested or invested in a single character. I kept reading in the hope that something would change, but it never did. It’s really too bad when an idea that has such potential turns out be such a disappointment. Why on earth so many raved about this book is beyond me. Maybe it’s the same reason crappy movies do so well at the box office…the general public have no clue about what’s really worthy of our time, attention, and praise.

This book was taunting me for weeks, “BUY ME! BUY ME!” I read about it online, I read the book jacket. I thought I can’t wait to read this. There was just one hitch, The Help is still in hardcover. I rarely buy hardcovers unless they are deeply discounted. I always wait for the paperback because it is so much cheaper. I saw the hardcover for 30% off at Borders, and kept saying in my head, “Resist temptation! Resist temptation!” I did resist, but that same day at Target I saw that book for 30% off and other books deeply discounted. Needless to say, I went into Target for lotion and came out with lotion and four more books, including The Help!!! I don’t know about the rest of you but it is very hard to pass up books.

The Help takes place in 1962 in Jackson, Mississippi. It’s told from three different points of view. Aibileen is a wise black maid, helping raise yet another white child. Minny is her wise-cracking friend, who is also a maid. Minny’s mouth has gotten her in trouble more times than she can count. Now both of them take a huge risk to help a white woman, Skeeter Phelan, with a seemingly impossible task – let the world know what it’s really like to live and work during the civil rights era.

Aibileen works for Elizabeth Leefolt, cooking, cleaning and serving as a surrogate mother to her daughter Mae Mobley. She bites back her tongue as Miss Leefolt and her friend Hilly Holbrook talk about race relations in Jackson. Miss Hilly is one of those people who believed black people were oozing with diseases. It’s Miss Hilly who convinces Miss Leefolt to build a separate bathroom in the garage for Aibileen, so she can’t infect the Leefolt family.

After being blackballed by Miss Hilly, Minny finally has a new job as a maid for the seemingly crazy Miss Celia. Minny works under secrecy because Celia would rather let her husband, Johnny, believe that all she’s doing all of the cooking and cleaning. It leads to some rather hilarious episodes. This is a great pedometer for those striving to increase their exercise routine as it gives not only steps and distance but also aerobic steps and calories burned(always too few). It has a seven day memory so you can review your efforts. My favorite feature is that you can carry it in your pocket(it comes with a clip so it won’t fall out of your pocket or purse).

I don’t have much to say. I bought this particular cleaner because of the adundance of positive reviews. It has performed exactly as advertised and is a great steam cleaner. The best feature has to be the seperate tanks. My old cleaner had a bag inside the dirty tank that held the clean water. It was a pain. HAving the seperate tanks is wonderful…

I had to read this book in high school. Oh my, it was so scandalous back then. I wanted a copy after the author passed away and reread the book 40 years after the first time. How our morals have changed. Still an awesome book. R.I.P. J.D.

This card worked great for 2 months, during which time it traveled to Istanbul and New York with me. Unfortunately, halfway through my trip to New York it failed. I have been unable to use it in my camera since then, although unlike some reviewers I was able to get my photos off of the card.

Twilight is the story of Bella Swan, a 17 year old girl who has just moved to Washington t o live with her father while her mother travels. when she arrives at her new school, she immediately notices a strange group of people sitting together at lunch. she is told that they are the Cullens,adopted teenagers of Dr. and Mrs.Cullen. In biology, Bella is partnered with Edward Cullen. He instantly appears to hate her and she is understandably confused. Later, he saves her life, then just walks away. increasing her fascination for him. then she goes to the beach and after hearing old legends from an Indian friend, she does some research and decides Edward is a vampire. While in town, he again saves her life from rapists this time, and confirms her theory. After a few more cryptic conversations, she agrees to hang out with him that weekend. So they hang out in a meadow and discuss their feelings all day before going back to her house. he stays over (nothing happens) and the next day he decides to take her to meet his family. So they go and while Bella is watching them play baseball, 3 strange vampires show up. they want to eat Bella. One is an extremely skilled tracker and he’ll stop at nothing to eat Bella, so she goes into hiding with 2 of Edward’s “siblings” Alice and her life partner Jasper. they stay in Arizona for a few days before the tracker tricks Bella and captures her, then tortures her a bit and is about to kill her when the Cullens show up and kill him. He bit Bella’s hand and she could turn into a vampire, but Edward doesn’t want her to, so he sucks out the venom and takes her to the prom (after she got out of the hospital) Then she tells him she wants to be a vampire, he says no, they agree to disagree, the end. unfortunately there’s more books after this one.
